William D. Gibbs, 83, of Castalia, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 17, 2012 at his home.
He was born on January 22, 1929 in Mount Sterling, Kentucky to the late Sylvester and Hattie (Woodard) Gibbs.
William served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. He worked for over 34 years at New Departure, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Erie-Wyandot Muzzleloader Gun Club, 4-County Conservation League, National Rifle Association, Girl Scouts, and 4-H Club. Additionally, he volunteered at the Camp Perry national matches, Back to the Wild, and the Ohio Veterans Home.
He was an avid reader, a hunter, and a fisherman. He loved gardening and taking care of his lawn. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
William is survived by his wife, Mary (Grantham) Gibbs, whom he married on January 15, 1953 in Hot Springs, Arkansas; sons, William T. Gibbs, Sidney, Ohio, Bruce S. Gibbs, Castalia, and David D. (Theresa) Gibbs, Castalia; granddaughters, Alison (Aaron) Lake, Adrienne Gibbs, and Stephanie (Keith) Killingsworth; grandsons, Anthony Gibbs and Brian Gibbs; great-grandchildren, Carly Lake, Augustus Lake, Natalie Lake, Brianna Wisenbarger, Victor Taylor, Ian Killingsworth, and Kylie Gibbs; step-great-grandson, Cohen Binette; sisters, Irene (Roger) Gourlie, Broxton, GA, Elsie Thurston, Medley, FL, Bertie Smith, Jacksonville, FL, and Wanda (Dennis) Schultz, Berlin Heights, OH; brothers, Glen, Jupiter, FL, Roger (Mary), Bell, FL, Haskel, Lawrenceburg, IN, and Danny (Jeanie), and Gilbert (Barb), both of Daytona Beach, FL; good friends, Jerry and Sue Hunt; faithful companion, his Jack Russell, Clancy; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Hunt, Opal Ellis, and Geraldine Mautone; and brothers, Clayton and Raymond.
At William's request, cremation will take place at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. There will be no visitation and family services will be private.
