Dolores Rose (Thomas) Hilaael, 74, of Akron, died on Saturday afternoon, September 22, 2012 in ManorCare Health Services, Akron, following a short illness.
She was born on June 6, 1938 in Sandusky to the late James and Viola (Craig) Thomas.

Dolores was an educator who retired in 2006 from Akron Public Schools after 33 years of distinguished service.
She was fond of mentoring young people and motivating them toward their endeavors as a teacher and counselor. She believed in the power of education. Her present day descendants include lawyers, doctors, teachers, and advocates of social justice. She was a gifted writer and the family historian. She had a great appreciation of African-American history. One of her major achievements was the creation of a family history set of books tracing the family's roots from the 21st century, to the roots of the American South, to West Africa. This was a tremendous life achievement.

Dolores is survived by her three daughters, Dr. Kim Denise (Hilaael) Amponsah, of Lakewood, Dawn Regina Hilaael, of Akron, Natale Noela (Hilaael) Badillo, of Cleveland; five grandchildren; sister, Gloria (Thomas) Lott, of Canton; sister-in-law, Linda L. Thomas, of Sandusky; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and loving relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Louverta (Thomas) Dixon and brother, Bruce Thomas.

Friends may call on Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 11 A.M. until time of funeral services at 12:30 P.M. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky. The Rev. Tom Hayes, Sr. will officiate. Burial will follow in Perkins Cemetery, Perkins Twp.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Akron Urban League, 440 Vernon Odom Blvd., Akron, OH 44307, in memory of Dolores Rose (Thomas) Hilaael.
