Walter G. Babcock Jr.

Walter G. Babcock Jr., of Indianapolis IN died Friday, Dec 28 2012 at the age of 90.

Mr. Babcock had been married for 69 years Christmas evening to Marian F Babcock (Cross). He was born in Sandusky OH on December 7, 1922, to Walter G. "Mike" Babcock and Annabelle M Babcock (Ontko) who preceded him in death.

Mr. Babcock was a graduate of Sandusky High School and was an avid all sports participant serving as captain and quarterback on the SHS team in 1940. He attended Bowling Green University for one semester when he was drafted for service in the US Army Air Force. For three years, he served mostly in the South Pacific as an aircraft mechanic. His C-46 was the first plane to land in Japan proper after the "bomb." He attained the rank of Sgt. His three brothers, Robert, Joseph and David also served in separate forces of the US Military during WWII.
Mr. Babcock retired in Ashland OH after 32 years (29 years in management) with Western & Southern Life Insurance Company of Cincinnati OH. He received every award offered by his company for outstanding salesmanship as an agent (Sandusky), manager and district manager (Gary IN and Ashland/Mansfield OH). He was well known for his passion of providing insurance products to his customers to protect their financial futures.

He also served in many community charity drives such as the Polio Drive, Easter Egg Program, JC Park, Red Feather program. He was a charter member of the YMCA, president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, president of the Senior "Y" Men's Club and was a working official of the Mansfield Track meets for 32 years. He was a member of the VFW, AMVETS, American Legion, and a volunteer at the Ohio Veterans Home as well as being a board member of the Salvation Army in the 1950's. He also served as Sunday School Sec/Treasurer of First Evangelical and Reformed Church in Sandusky. He was an enthusiastic public speaker as well as having a passion for horses.

Mr. Babcock is survived by his wife, Marian and three children: Walter G III of Indianapolis IN; James A of Florida and Barbara A Phillip of Brookfield WI; three brothers: Robert D of Guilford CT; Joseph C of Springfield MA; and David J of Urbandale IA, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Private graveside services in Sandusky OH will be held at a future date. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, Sandusky is assisting the family with arrangements.
