Larry Lee Groover

Larry Lee Groover, 73, Sandusky, lost his brief battle with small cell lung cancer on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at his home, with his family by his side.

He was born on July 7, 1939 in Greenville, PA, and moved to the Sandusky area in 1966.

Larry worked 40 years with the railroads, starting on his 18th birthday with Bessemmer and Lake Erie Railroad in Shenango, PA, and then hired on with Nickle Plate Railroad in Conneaut, OH, and after several mergers he worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad in Bellevue, OH.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving two years (during the Bay of Pigs episode) as an M.P. and Honor Guard Flag Carrier.

Larry enjoyed sports, both watching and participating. He played baseball, softball, bowling, and golf. He also enjoyed deer hunting in the northwestern mountains of Pennsylvania with his family.

He was a member of Science Lodge #50 F. & A.M., where he was past Worshipful Master in 1992, and a 32nd degree mason, Valley of Toledo. Larry was a very active member of the Singara Grotto.

Larry is survived by his wife of 48 years, B. Virginia (Cooper) Groover; son, Christopher Groover, Sandusky; daughters, Lauri Perdue, Willard, OH, and Julie Groover, Sandusky; grandchildren, Alexis Groover, Alayna Groover, Jacob Groover, Jacey Groover, Jaimie Reichman, Corey Perdue, Shelbie Perdue, and Ryan Perdue; brother, William (Kathleen) Groover, Lake City, FL; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Gladys (Beil) Groover; and aunts and uncles.

Friends may call on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, from 4-8 P.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Science Lodge #50 F. & A.M. will hold memorial services at 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home. On Thursday, friends may also call from 10 A.M. until time of funeral services at 11 A.M. in the funeral home. Rev. Gerald Fenske of St. Stephens United Church of Christ will officiate. Entombment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
