Edward A. Hammersmith, 98, of Norwalk, died Sunday afternoon, January 27, 2013 at his residence.

He was born February 6, 1914 in Erie Twp., Ohio to the late Edward William and Elizabeth Anna (Zimmerman) Hammersmith and came to this area in 1933 from Bellevue. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, and he graduated in 1932 from Bellevue High School. Ed was a lifelong area farmer and had worked for Norwalk Furniture. He was a member of Norwalk Conservation Club, and the Huron County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed gardening , freezing and canning, yard work, baking and cooking, making hay, was proud of his John Deere tractors, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte E. (Moll) Hammersmith of Norwalk, Ohio, by his children, Ann and Jack Frankart of Willard, Ohio, Norma J. and Lawrence Ross, Sr., of Norwalk, Ohio, Paul E. and Diane Hammersmith of Willard, Ohio, James H. and Suzie Hammersmith of Norwalk, Ohio, and Donna J. and Gerald Mahl of Willard, Ohio. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 8 step great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren, by his brother and sister in law, Harold and Wilma Hammersmith of Norwalk, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian in 1988, by his brothers, Raymond and Alfred, by his sisters, Anna Carabin, Magdeline Adelman, and Marian Preston, and 1 great grandchild.

Friends may call on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 from 4:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main St. Norwalk, Ohio, Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main St. Norwalk, Ohio, Msgr. Kenneth Morman will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery.
